What makes this one different

What problem does it solve?

The Stroop effect is one of the most replicated phenomena in cognitive psychology: when a color word is printed in a different-colored ink, the meaning of the word interferes with naming the ink color, and reaction time jumps by ~50–100 ms. It is the classic index of cognitive control — the ability to ignore irrelevant information and stick with the relevant one.

Practicing Stroop seems to sharpen selective attention in the moment. Whether it transfers to other inhibition tasks is debated (see Limitations below).

How to interpret your results

Errors vs. RT trade-off. Fast with few errors is good. Slow with no errors is OK but suggests you're being over-cautious. Errors with fast RTs suggests you're rushing. Track both.

Congruent vs. incongruent RT gap. About half the trials are congruent (e.g., word "RED" in red ink) and half incongruent. A large gap means interference is strong — that's normal. A small gap can come from either excellent control or just slow responses overall.

Fatigue signal. If your RT chart slopes upward by >40 ms from the first to the last quarter, your final scores are noisy. Stop, rest, and rerun.

Limitations

  • Browser timing is good but not lab-grade. Expect ±10–20 ms jitter vs. dedicated equipment.
  • Color rendering varies by display. A "red" word on a poorly calibrated laptop may look slightly orange. We use high-saturation colors to minimize this.
  • The Stroop effect is robust, but the transfer from Stroop practice to general inhibition in daily life is contested. Most studies show small or no transfer.
  • For Chinese, we use simplified characters (红/蓝/绿/黄). If you're a traditional-character reader your RTs may be longer; that's a real linguistic effect, not a bug.
  • This is not a diagnostic tool for ADHD or other conditions. Clinical Stroop tests have standardized materials and examiner protocols we don't replicate here.

Frequently asked questions

Should I focus on speed or accuracy?

Balanced. Most labs use a speed-accuracy emphasis ("go fast but don't make silly errors"). If your error rate climbs above 15%, slow down — accuracy is the cleaner signal.

Why are some words in other languages?

To test whether bilingual or unfamiliar-language Stroop interference is different. For most people it's slightly smaller in a non-native language (the word meaning interferes less).

Can I disable the fatigue chart?

No — it's the headline feature of this version. The point is that a single error count hides whether you got worse over time. The trend reveals that.
